Days 4 & 5

Here are a few of our poems inspired by the live oak trees we have seen all over Sapelo Island:

The live oak
Is big
Long
Hairy
And old
A lot of features
Good to look at
Makes me
Think about life
Feeling free
That is why
It is Georgia’s tree

-Shem Nduwimana

Live oaks live a long time
They just keep growing
I have grown in a lot of ways
I have become more
Independent
Confident
And more mature
You can see that by
The way I talk and walk
I am growing up
Reading to take on the world
I hope that one day
I will leave my mark
On this world
In a good way
So that I can live on
Just like the live oak

- Teresa Dominguez

Live oaks are tall
Like a small building
Branches look like
Slenderman’s arms
Surrounded by cabins
Big like a statue
Dangling with Spanish moss
Leaves on it
Insects maybe living
Inside the oak

- Joshua Medley-Fowlkes

Live oak
True to Georgia
Big tree takes up a lot of space
Very long and clumsy
They attract Spanish moss
I love to see bird houses
On the live oak
I like when the braches are together
The branches make me think of
Pride and joy
The live oak reminds me
Of my great grandma
Standing on her
Own will

- Chris Williams

From this tree came several features
For air is only a fraction
They have mastered arts of life
And can live for an eternity
Their diameter is large
Their wood is as strong as a diamond
Though many may think the life of a tree
Is nothing more than a breeze,
They are wrong
The life of a tree is the life of a soul
The life of a soul is simply a life

- Ian McCarthy

The limbs hang like monkeys from trees
With a grin
I rub my chin
And think about what’s within
The trees are green
And so am I
As I leave with my
Suit and tie

- Luke Tracey

Days 2 & 3

A few of our poems inspired by the St. Simon's lighthouse...

The lighthouse
Sits on the edge
Of St. Simon’s
The beach spreads out
Far and wide
And the light house
Stands behind it
The top is the best
It feels amazing to
Just stand there

- Jacob Dannenfelser

Spooky as a ghost
Charming as a king
Feels like a porcupine
Touching against our bodies
Like a dead man
Creeping against the wind
Soaring into the darkness

-Morgan McGahan

The lighthouse
So big
And so tall
Stands
Like a giraffe
A mysterious voice
Inside
Like a haunted
Ghost

- Amanda Pilkenton

Christ Church Poetry

Assignment:  Write a poem that connects one of the photographs you took at the church (or cemetery) to one of the trip themes we have discussed:  Strength, Change, Family, Land, Choice or Survival

The Baby Grave

The baby grave
So small
Lived for only
Four months
Just a
Newborn
Been there for
A long time
Under the
Dark
Cold
Ground

-Amanda Pilkenton

The Gateway to Change

Change is not easy
It never has been
And it never will be
But you have to make
The first step
Through the doorway
To change
If you walk in
You can always
Walk out
But if you do
You will almost always
Regret it

-Ajani Issa

Church

Quiet and sweet like a mouse
Built with old wood and stones
Like my grandparents' house
Hundreds of years old
The location is not very cold
Dead bodies to dwell
The church has many stories to tell

- Josh Miller

Change

Jesus changes people's lives
From a sinner to a believer
Lives changed
Father teaching his son
About life
Son's perspective forever
Changed
Church can change you
Change

- Teresa Dominguez
